Inspection and testing of forming machines

Forming machines are a specific sub-group of work equipment whose improper use poses an extremely high risk of causing an accident with permanent consequences for their operator. It is therefore extremely important to carry out regular inspection and tests of forming machines while they are in service.

Pursuant to Article 7.3 of STN 21 0700:1985. Forming machines. The general safety requirements for the design of forming machines, as amended by change No. 4/1997, require that forming machines be tested for compliance with safety requirements at least once a year.

What machines are classified as forming machines?

Forming machines include centre and crank presses, press brakes, spindle presses, hydraulic presses, pneumatic presses, plate shears, roll bending machines, straighteners, bending machines, automatic progressive presses, forging presses.

When is it necessary to inspect and test forming machines?

  • Before a forming machine is put into service, meaning before its first use in the workplace
  • When a forming machine is moved, after installation in its new location
  • Whenever exceptional circumstances occur that could jeopardise the safe operation of the equipment, such as a modification, fault, accident, exposure to natural phenomena or a long period of non-use
  • After conversion of a forming machine
  • Regularly, at least once a year, pursuant to Article 7.3 of STN 21 0700:1985
  • When putting into operation equipment that has previously been operated in another EU country or outside the EU (when equipment is imported from abroad)
